Kogi State Government has inaugurated the State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (KSPHEOC).
The centre is within the Ministry of Health where daily epidemic intelligence gathering and risk analysis of public health events or identification of potential threats aimed at informing and timely response are coordinated to ensure protection of citizens.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Haruna who inaugurated the centre, said that the establishment of the Public Health Centre is to ensure timely response to health emergency situations.
The Commissioner said the centre will also ensure aligning multi partners support within common response framework.
According to him, the project is the initiative of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), for which the state Government keyed in with the provision of the needed infrastructure.
Dr Saka who commended Governor Yahaya Bello for his commitment in the growth of the Health sector, noted that the world was now facing complex public health challenges for which the State has had it’s own share of outbreak.
He said this year the State was confronted with Lasa fever, Yellow fever and Cholera in some part of the state as well as the recent flooding with it’s health challenges.
Also speaking, the Director General Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu commended Governor Yahaya Bello for being an inspiration to upcoming leaders.
He pointed out that the Centre would be supported by the NCDC in public health emergencies as well as train the workforce to respond to health issues.
